Beijing: The central focus of London's work in the next five months will be its plans for the Beijing games, and a large observer team will travel to Beijing to learn valuable lessons about staging the event. The Olympic flag will pass to London, a moment that will have a global audience of billions offering London a wonderful opportunity to set the tone for the next four years.

David Beckham launches London 2012 Olympics

All aboard – destination Beijing. A red double-decker bus, symbol of London, will burst into the arena at the closing ceremony of this summer’s Olympic Games, carrying stars such as David Beckham and Leona Lewis, to herald Britain’s hosting of the 2012 Olympiad.

The open-top bus is already en route by container ship to China.

Once inside the 90,000-seat Beijing National Stadium, built to resemble a bird’s nest, Beckham is expected to hop off to kick footballs with children representing every country in the world. At the next “stop” inside the £250m arena, Lewis, who won the X Factor talent show in 2006, will perform to a glo-bal television audience forecast to number 1.5 billion. Then the two stars will link arms as 40 dancers from groups as diverse as London’s hip-hop scene and the Royal Opera strut their stuff.

The £2m extravaganza, lasting just eight minutes, is London’s contribution to the closing ceremony on Sunday August 24. It will be mirrored by a show in Trafalgar Square and street parties in 10 other cities, including Cardiff, Glasgow and Manchester.

'Ping pong is coming home': Boris takes hold of the baton

Who better than an eccentric Englishman to take the Games from Beijing to London? Cue Boris Johnson.

The London Mayor strode on to the international stage yesterday, happily waved the Olympic flag, and told the watching world in no uncertain terms: "Ping pong is coming home".

He waved the huge banner as he was joined by Gordon Brown and other senior ministers as he addressed the throng at a party in Beijing which was held to celebrate the handover to London in typical style by hailing Britain as the inventor of the parlour game turned Olympic favourite.

In a speech peppered with classical references at London House, the British Games' headquarters in Beijing, Mr Johnson said Britain had invented table tennis over its dining tables before it became a Chinese national obsession.

To cheers from the assembled British officials, Mr Johnson declared that the Chinese "have excelled magnificently at ping pong. Ping pong was invented on the dining tables of England and it was called whiff whaff".

"There you have, I think, the essential difference between us and the rest of the world. Other nations such as the French looked at the dining table and saw the opportunity to have dinner. We looked at the dining table and saw an opportunity to play whiff whaff.

He continued: "That is why London is the sporting capital of the world. I say to the Chinese and I say to the world – ping pong is coming home."
