The Basketball Venue « Thread Started on Feb 24, 2008, 2:35pm »
The Basketball and Fencing Arenas are both located within the Olympic Park. The Basketball venue will be adjacent to the Olympic Stadium. During the Games it will have 12,000 seats for the Basketball events and 4,500 seats during the Modern Pentathlon events. During the Paralympic Games it will have 10,000 seats for Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Rugby.
After the Games the Basketball Arena will be dismantled and relocated to provide a facility elsewhere in the UK.
The 8,000-seat Fencing Hall will be located in the Park close to the Olympic Village. It will host Fencing during the Olympic Games and Paralympic Judo and Wheelchair Fencing during the Paralympic Games.
After the Games the venue will be taken down to leave open space in the Park. Fencers will be able to take part in the sport in the nearby Handball Arena, which will become a multi-sport facility.
ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said: ‘We are looking for design teams to provide innovative solutions for important temporary arenas such as Basketball and Fencing. Industry has responded positively to this challenge and I’m looking forward to seeing the submissions put forward from the impressive teams on the short list.’

The Olympic Delivery Authority has submitted Wilkinson Eyre’s 2012 basketball stadium for planning permission
The 12,000-seat stadium — which has not been seen until now — will be one of the largest temporary venues built for any Olympic competition, and is designed to be deconstructed and relocated after the games.
The concept designs show a fabric-clad frame, featuring strong geometric designs, graphics or art created by a yet-to-be-appointed cladding subcontractor, and architectural lighting, said the ODA. Cladding will be single-skin, and could be made of recyclable PVC, or even hemp.
Wilkinson Eyre said: “The concept of a temporary arena is intrinsically linked to ODA sustainability targets embodied within the basketball brief. The architecture of the buildings embodies the aspirations of conserve, reuse and recycle.”
The venue will be used for Olympic basketball, Paralympic wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby.

30 October 2009 Planning reference: 09/90275/AODODA Tagged with: Sports | Design review | London | London 2012 | London 2012 We reviewed the original planning application for this scheme on 30 January 2009.
We have now considered the additional information provided relating to the detailed design of the external membrane of the Basketball venue and make the following comments in respect of detail and the overall building.
We are happy to support the outcome of what has been a productive, iterative design process. Certainty as to use and re-use has helped focus on the necessary attributes of this very large temporary facility. We think, as proposed, the venue will be striking and that the final detail design of sculpted membrane panels is a considerable improvement on earlier versions.
We think the proposed LED lighting strategy in its current form would be acceptable although we would understand if other strategies, for example projection, were in the end employed. In respect of the fabric colour we think that projection would be better served by the lighter colour envisaged. We anticipate reviewing the final proposed lighting choice at the appropriate time.
